Our commitment to accessible curriculum
Schoolhouse is committed to making curriculum content accessible to all learners, teachers, and administrators — including those who use assistive technology. This page describes our current conformance level, known limitations, and how to reach us with accessibility questions.
Web content — WCAG 2.1 AA
Our target conformance level for all web pages is WCAG 2.1 Level AA and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. We aim to meet this standard across the public curriculum pages, the standards crosswalk, pricing, and all student-facing lesson content.
Current status: pages are built with semantic HTML, sufficient color contrast ratios (>4.5:1 for normal text), keyboard-navigable navigation, and descriptive link text. Interactive elements (the request-access form, the Charging Station activity) include ARIA labels and focus management.
PDF teacher editions
Print-ready teacher-edition PDFs are generated from the same structured MDX source as the web pages. We are working toward tagged, screen-reader-accessible PDF output (PDF/UA). Current PDFs are primarily intended for print; digital accessibility of PDF files is on our remediation roadmap for the 2026–27 school year.
If a teacher or staff member requires an accessible version of specific content before that work is complete, contact us and we will provide an alternative format directly.
Curriculum content design
The K-12 curriculum itself is designed with accessibility in mind. Each unit includes a Differentiation & Access document covering:
- Vision and color-contrast accommodations (labels never rely on color alone)
- Hearing accommodations and gesture-based alternatives
- AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) device support
- ELL / English-learner language scaffolds
- IEP / 504 support tiers and fine-motor alternatives
The K-2 band activities are 100% unplugged — no device or network interaction is required for students, which removes a category of digital-access barriers at the elementary level.
VPAT / ACR
A Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) / Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) is available on request. Contact us and we will provide the current ACR within five business days.
