INV-12 · Investment committee
Present a deal to an investment committee, defend it, and take a recorded vote. What are your kill criteria, and what does the dissent say?
The question
Present a deal to an investment committee, defend it, and take a recorded vote. What are your kill criteria, and what does the dissent say?
Data room / materials
One deal from this bank's case files, usually Acme's Series B, using the student's earlier work (INV-01, INV-02, INV-06, or INV-08). A committee of three to five: peers, a teacher, and an advisory mentor. USE: any AI-assisted analysis is reconciled before it is presented.
Expected failure modes
Presenting a decision instead of a question. Kill criteria written after the vote. A unanimous vote with no recorded dissent. Numbers on slides that no earlier work supports. Mistaking a simulated vote for a real investment.
Done looks like
A memo with the recommendation, the thesis, the three biggest risks, and kill criteria written and dated before the meeting; a ten-minute presentation; a recorded vote with reasons; a written dissent — by the student if the vote was unanimous; and a statement that this was a simulated committee on a fictional company.
Five C's
CT: defending a position against informed challenge. CR: writing kill criteria that could actually trigger. CO: the committee itself. CM: the presentation and the dissent. CZ: everyone downstream of a committee's decision.
Mentor role
An investor or finance professional sits on the committee and asks the hardest question. Standing instruction: reject kill criteria written after results were known. School-supervised.
Rubric calibration
R1: one deal, one vote. R2: every number traced to earlier work. R3: comparator is the deal with no committee review. R4: kill criteria and risks named. R5: this brief is R5. R6: the dissent is real, and no real investment is implied.
Two ways this goes wrong
(a) A polished pitch with kill criteria nobody could hit. (b) A unanimous vote with no dissent recorded, so the committee certifies itself.
Credit lane fit
Lane A immediately (capstone showcase or a business-education competitive event used as a rubric crosswalk). The natural finale for this track. No verified credit claim.
